Women leaders and the power of the community in the Asia-Pacific region
The 6th Annual Women Leaders APEC Roundtable Breakfast, co-hosted by Women Political Leaders (WPL) in partnership with Merck, takes place at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) CEO Summit on 16th November in Santiago de Chile, Chile.
This Roundtable offers an unique opportunity for women leaders across the Asia Pacific region to meet and, thanks to their leadership roles and experience in various sectors, pinpoint strategic issues that contribute to stronger trade and economic growth in the Asia Pacific region.
Benefitting from the theme “Women, SMEs and Inclusive Growth” selected by Chile – 2019’s APEC host economy – as one of its APEC host year themes, the 6th Annual Women Leaders Roundtable serves as an informal platform for networking and establishing a meaningful dialogue on women’s economic empowerment issues.
This year the inaugural winner of the APEC Healthy Women, Healthy Economies Research Prize will be invited to participate in the Roundtable to discuss her or his research. The Prize, announced by President Sebastián Piñera at the 5th Roundtable in 2018, was launched in partnership with Merck, a leading science and technology company. The aim of the Prize is to spotlight and spur the creation of sex-disaggregated data and gender-based research that enables policymakers, business leaders, and others to identify and implement measures to improve women’s health in APEC economies so women can join, thrive, and rise in the workforce. This year, 30 research papers were submitted from researchers across ten APEC economies.
The Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) is a regional economic forum established in 1989 to leverage the growing interdependence of the Asia-Pacific. APEC’s 21 members aim to create greater prosperity for the people of the region by promoting balanced, inclusive, sustainable, innovative and secure growth and by accelerating regional economic integration. Every year one of the 21 APEC Member Economies plays host to APEC meetings and serves as the APEC Chair. Chile is the first APEC host economy to select “Women, SMEs and Inclusive Growth” as one of its APEC host year themes. On November 17, 2018 President Sebastián Piñera announced Chile’s intention to inaugurate an “APEC Healthy Women, Healthy Economies Research Prize” in partnership with Merck.
