FemAI Leaders for Africa
Catalysing AI Excellence for Inclusive and Transformative Governance

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is reshaping governance and policymaking globally. African women political leaders play a crucial role in ensuring AI is adopted ethically and inclusively to enhance governance, address disparities, and drive societal progress.
The FemAI Leaders for Africa Initiative – a collaboration between Women Political Leaders (WPL) and the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit GmbH (GIZ) – celebrates their leadership, fosters mutual learning, equips leaders with AI knowledge and drives ethical, inclusive AI adoption across the continent.
Why this matters
"African women political leaders are not just participants - they are pioneers in AI adoption. This initiative is a celebration of their leadership, fostering collaboration to shape AI as a tool for governance, innovation, and equity."
The gender gap in AI policy and leadership
Despite the rapid development of AI strategies across Africa, women remain significantly underrepresented in AI policymaking: Only 10% of AI-related policy documents globally mention gender inclusion (UNESCO, 2023). Without diverse leadership in AI governance, policies risk overlooking the needs of entire communities.
AI as a political tool for stronger governance
AI can enhance governance by improving decision-making, increasing transparency, and optimising resource allocation. For political leaders, AI enables data-driven policymaking, efficient public service delivery,
and better citizen engagement. When used responsibly, AI strengthens democracy, fosters accountability, and ensures governance is more responsive to societal needs.Women Political Leaders must shape AI for society
AI must serve society as a whole, not just a privileged few. Women political leaders can ensure AI policies are ethical, transparent, and inclusive—protecting citizens'
rights, preventing bias, and promoting responsible AI deployment. Their leadership can bridge digital divides, drive fair access, and ensure AI contributes to economic and social progress. For AI to truly drive societal progress, governance must guarantee fair access, accountability, and public trust.Collaboration fosters global learning
Bringing together African women political leaders with global AI experts, policymakers, and private sector stakeholders fosters the exchange of experience, best practices, knowledge and policy innovations. These collaborations ensure AI governance is more diverse, inclusive, and responsive to real-world challenges.
