3-4 April 2014, Reykjavík, Iceland

The Women in Parliaments Global Forum (WIP), in cooperation with the Parliament of Iceland, will meet in Reykjavík to study Iceland’s success in gender equality, from 3 to 4 April. This will be the first time that the Parliament of Iceland opens its plenary for a conference of an international group of female MPs.

Female Parliamentarians from around the world (*) will gather to discuss about the policies that were needed to tackle gender inequality in Iceland – the current global leader in gender equality, according to the World Economic Forum’s Global Gender Gap Report 2013 – and to debate whether the Icelandic model can be exported to other regions of the world.

The official programme of the WIP Study Trip includes: Plenary Sessions with Icelandic politicians (Members of the Government and MPs from all political parties), Field Visits to companies with women in top positions, and meetings with the Prime Minister, Sigmundur Davíð Gunnlaugsson and the President of Iceland, Ólafur Ragnar Grímsson.

Vigdís Finnbogadóttir, the first woman in the world to be democratically elected Head of State, will receive the “WIP Award for Lifetime Achievements in Female Political Empowerment” on Friday 4 April.

Three Plenary Debates will give the opportunity to national politicians to explain their experience in closing the gender gap and overcoming gender stereotypes in Iceland, while the Field Visits will provide participants with first-hand insights into the companies Actavis, Lýsi, RioTinto Alcan and Steinunn. They all have women CEOs, who will meet with the international Parliamentarians.
