Empowering Refugee and Migrant Women in the Integration Process
The Women Political Leaders Global Forum (WPL) and the Permanent Mission of Italy to the United Nations will co-host a seminar entitled Empowering Refugee and Migrant Women in the Integration Process as a side event to the 72nd United Nations General Assembly (UNGA 72). It will take place on 21st September 2017 from 9:30 to 11:45 am.
The objective of the seminar is to explore ways to empower women, and to develop the untapped potential of migrant and refugee women in integration dynamics. A special focus on women is relevant, as women suffer the consequences of conflict and displacement differently. They are exposed to greater risks when displaced, or migrating in the search for safety or a better future.
There is an increasing need for stronger gender mainstreaming in migration policies. The debate will draw from best practices in Italy, Malta and Jordan.
Political Leadership – The Icelandic Case
Iceland is the world leader in gender equality. It is the country where women and men have almost the same opportunities. This success is encouraging and an interesting case study for other countries, which make gender equality a priority for its society.
Iceland will host the WPL Annual Global Summit 2017 in Reykjavik. During UNGA, the Prime Minister of Iceland Bjarni Benediktsson, patron of the WPL Leadership Campaign, together with WPL invites all women political leaders present at UNGA to celebrate the Icelandic achievements, and set the scene for the WPL Annual Summit later this year.
