In 2020, even as the most serious public health threat in modern history continued to surge worldwide, WPL Country Ambassadors stepped in and contributed extensively to WPL’s 2020 initiatives.

WPL Ambassadors serve as the main point of contact for cooperation and for WPL initiatives and events in their respective Parliaments. They are provided the opportunity to represent their countries by attending global conferences to network with other female Parliamentarians and to work with WPL’s numerous partner organisations. In 2020, WPL Country Ambassadors have contributed extensively to WPL initiatives, webinars, and events all year round, committing themselves to the goal of a more inclusive and equal society.

As panelists in digital webinars, and as contributors to videos and other communications, offering personal and expert testimonials to boost visibility initiatives on numerous topics, WPL Country Ambassadors missed no opportunity to reaffirm the dire need to build a more inclusive and equal society. Speaking as informed Members of Parliaments in their countries, they shared their experiences and explained the many initiatives and measures they have been putting in place. These include: initiatives in recognition of the efforts of healthcare workers, especially women, who occupy the majority of the healthcare workforce; actions to raise awareness and put an end to sexual violence in conflict zones across the globe; and legislative measures to achieve equal pay among women and men.

On specific days such as the International Day of the Girl, they celebrated girls’ rights while recognising the many and diverse challenges they face in different regions of the globe.

On the 8th of March, International Women’s Day, as COVID-19 began to spread and demand a unique international response and cross-border cooperation, they joined with other Parliamentarians to contribute to WPL’s social media campaign. Jointly they called on female and male leaders alike to help speed progress toward equal status and opportunities for women globally.

At the Reykjavík Global Forum 2020, WPL Country Ambassadors used their Power, Together and shared views on how to build back better in 2021, verifying their commitment to realising a new normal where women in political leadership are no longer the exception, but the rule.
