Women politicians from 87 countries convened for the annual WPL Summit, co-hosted by the Japanese House of Representatives in Tokyo on 25-27 June in Tokyo. The focus of the discussions was on how to advance society by taking action through the Sustainable Development Goals. It was consensus, that the SDGs can only be achieved in 2030, if equality between women and men is achieved.

This year, the WPL Summit 2019 takes place at a timely moment: on the eve of the G20 Summit, happening in Osaka, and during Japan’s Gender Equality Week.
In June 1999, the Basic Act for Gender-Equal Society was promulgated and enacted: composed of five basic principles, this Act aims to “the formation of a society, where women and men have the right to equally participate to the society and its economy.”

The WPL Summit 2019 addresses four main questions:
How can we advance the world through Sustainable Development Goals?
In September 2015, during the United Nations Sustainable Development Summit, 193 countries unanimously agreed to adopt 17 interconnected ambitious goals and 169 closely linked targets: the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). These address global challenges: poverty, inequality, climate, environmental degradation, prosperity, and peace and justice.

The WPL Summit 2019 is set to progress on the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) on the eve of the G20 Summit. On June 25-27, in the premises of the National Diet of Japan, renowned politicians from all regions of the world will discuss tangible proposals around the theme of ‘Advancing Society Through SDGs’.

From peace and justice, to quality education, health and clean energy, these are only some of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) all United Nations Member States unanimously adopted in 2015. The Goals provide a shared blueprint for peace and prosperity for people and the planet, now and into the future, and have been selected by WPL and the House of Representatives of Japan to prompt discussions at the WPL Summit 2019.

January 14, 2019 – The House of Representatives of Japan will co-host the WPL Summit 2019 in Tokyo from the 25th to 27th of June. This immediately precedes the G20 Summit, which Japan will host on June 28-29. It will be the first WPL Summit ever held in East Asia.
