The Women Political Leaders Global Forum (WPL) held a WPL council on economic empowerment meeting during the UNISDR Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction 2017 focusing on economic empowerment of women as a driver for reducing disaster risk. WPL also participated in several panels of the program.
The United Nations International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (UNISDR) Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction 2017 took place in Cancun (Mexico) on May 22-26. The event aimed to discuss how the work of Parliamentarians can contribute to the implementation of the Sendai Framework for the Reduction of Disaster Risk Reduction.
The encounter was organised by the Senate and the Chamber of Deputies of Mexico with the support of UNISDR parliamentarian initiative.
The event provided a space for legislators to share their best practices, country experiences and commitments for disaster risk reduction. Participants also received information on practical tools to facilitate the inclusion of this topic in the legislative agenda.
UNISDR Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction
The UNISDR Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction (Global Platform), as recognised by the UN General Assembly, is the main forum at the global level for strategic advice, coordination, partnership development and the review of progress in the implementation of international instruments on disaster risk reduction. It was established in 2006 and is now the world’s foremost gathering of stakeholders committed to reducing disaster risk and building the resilience of communities and nations
