Gabriela Morawska-Stanecka, Deputy Marshal of the Senate, Member of the Senate:  “It is an honor for me to be a WPL Ambassador to Poland. I will support women’s activities in every aspect of social and political life. It seems to me extremely important to focus primarily on counteracting economic, mental, physical and sexual violence against women in Poland. I will work on the implementation of the provisions of the Istanbul Convention (on preventing and combating violence against women and domestic violence) ratified by Poland in April 2015. As a representative of Women’s Congress Association in my country I am in favor of creating equal opportunities for women in science as well as introducing parities in state-owned companies and all public entities. I will strongly support efforts to change the definition of rape in Polish criminal law, which is currently based on the use of violence, and to introduce recognition as rape of any sexual act committed without the consent of the other party, no matter whether it met with loud and firm resistance. The definition of rape based on the lack of consent rather than the use of force works already in countries such as the United Kingdom, Germany, Sweden, or Belgium. I am looking forward to taking part in WPL initiatives and exchanging ideas about women’s roles in modern society.”

Bio:

Gabriela Morawska-Stanecka is a Senator and Deputy Marshal of the Senate of Poland. in 1991, she graduated from the Faculty of Law and Administration of the Jagiellonian University in Cracow with a Master of Law degree. Gabriela Morawska-Stanecka is a Member of Stowarzyszenie Kongres Kobiet (Women’s Congress Association) and its representative in Katowice. She is involved in extensive social and educational activities related to equality issues, women’s rights, and protection against discrimination. In the 10th term Senate she is a member of the following committees: Human Rights, Rule of Law and Petitions, and Foreign and European Union Affairs.
